My Quest to be a Food Writer
Posted by kChoice on 02/20/08 in Culinary Arts
I’ve developed an interest in food writing lately. I’ve written food-related articles in the past, such as restaurant reviews, food-related business profiles, and content articles, but sometimes I think maybe I’d like to become a "real" food writer. I was curious what it takes, so I looked into it.
Here are some of the things that helps a food writer break into the business:
- Professional writing experience (which I have)
- Food-related published clips (which I also have)
- A culinary arts degree or some degree of culinary training (none of which I have)
- Experience as a chef or a cook (neither of which I have)
To really break into the food writing niche, I could go work as a cook — but it would probably make more sense just to attend classes at a culinary institute. Since I probably wouldn’t get a job at a really nice restaurant with my lack of experience — McDonald’s and Denny’s would probably be my choices — this would be the best way for me to gain experience that I could actually use writing food articles and restaurant reviews. After all, who reviews fast food or cheap restaurants like Denny’s?
