The Family Business – Too Much Work for Me

Ah, the family business. It’s been around for some time really. My grandfather started it when he arrived in the country 75 years ago and then my dad took over about 45 years ago. Now it’s time for me to start looking into taking it over and I just don’t know if it’s for me. You see, they have built and sold furniture for three quarters of a century and I have an information technology degree. They keep asking me what I was thinking getting a degree that had nothing to do with the business, but I was hoping what would actually happen is that they would figure out I was not interested by the fact I took that degree.
I was hoping that if I got a computer programming degree or a computer animation degree, they would stop and think for a moment and say “oh, well he doesn’t want to make furniture” but I suppose that doesn’t usually happen, at least not with my family. So, now I must figure out how to either tell them now (which seems somehow impossible with the next oldest sibling still yet to attend college and the one after that still in High School) or figure out how to use my IT skills regardless.
